As part of a global collaborative effort, Nama Fiji is a proud sponsor of the Art Loves Fiji expedition, a 12-day volunteer eco-tourism journey blending adventure and advocacy to drive conservation and sustainable tourism in Fiji.
A Journey of Sustainability and Creativity: Nama Fiji Sponsors Art Loves Fiji
This initiative, produced by Art Loves Earth in partnership with VRTU Studios, brought together artists, filmmakers, and environmental advocates to shine a spotlight on Fiji’s natural beauty and the importance of preserving it for future generations. Many island nations, especially those isolated from larger continents, are facing the effects of global warming head on, and are looking for sustainable, effective solutions to help preserve their lifestyles and communities.

Celebrating Somosomo and Sustainable Nama Harvesting
One of the standout moments of the groundbreaking trip was the segment on Somosomo, home to the rich tradition of sustainable nama (sea grape) harvesting. Spearheaded by Debra Sadranu and Nama Fiji, this feature highlighted the ethical sourcing of nama, and the difficulties the village is facing related to quickening sea level and temperature rise. Nama, a marine treasure renowned for its skincare benefits and a large part of Somosomo's economy, is in jeopardy if trends continue and the water continues to get hotter each season.
Despite these struggles, Debra Sadranu, a pioneer in Fiji’s spa and beauty industry, has been at the forefront of sustainable nama harvesting, ensuring that the women of Somosomo can continue this time-honored practice while protecting the marine ecosystem. Through Nama Fiji, these natural sea grapes are transformed into premium skincare products, providing economic opportunities for local communities while promoting ethical and eco-friendly beauty solutions for a global audience.
Empowering Communities, Protecting Nature
The collaboration between Nama Fiji and Art Loves Fiji showcases how sustainability and business can go hand in hand. By supporting this expedition, Nama Fiji reinforced its commitment to ethical beauty, environmental conservation, and community empowerment. The Yasawa Islands are remote and home to many different communities that are hard to access and long distances apart, but the villages find ways to take care of one another when it matters most.
Most businesses, regardless of industry, are able to make conscious changes that can prioritize conservation and environmental responsibility; which can be a smart and profitable strategy in the long run. Lifting up and empowering local communities are an integral part in the longevity and synergy of businesses in the 21st century. There are many different ways to incorporate sustainable solutions, some more permanent than others:
- Protecting natural resources, reducing waste, and adopting sustainable practices help ensure the stability of supply chains and lower operational costs over time.
- Investing in eco-friendly alternatives—such as renewable energy, responsible sourcing, and efficient production— allows companies to reduce risks associated with resource scarcity and regulatory changes. Additionally, consumers are increasingly drawn to businesses that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability, which can enhance brand reputation and customer loyalty.
- Supporting local communities through conservation efforts fosters goodwill and strengthens relationships with key stakeholders. While the transition to sustainable practices may require initial investment, the long-term benefits—cost savings, resilience, and market advantage—make it a strategic and forward-thinking choice for businesses looking to grow responsibly.
From sunrise art activations to coral restoration efforts, Art Loves Fiji was more than just a journey—it was a movement. And thanks to sponsors like Nama Fiji, it amplified the message that sustainability isn’t just a trend but a way of life.
